Pastille Sculpture

In 2018 we were approached by Office of McFarlane Biggar Architects to design and build a large sculptural feature for the interior of Anthem Properties’ Station Square project. The design brief was wonderfully open — use colour in a subtle way to create a dynamic sculptural focal point in the lobby of this residential building.

The sculpture that evolved through our collaboration with OMB cascades down three stories through the buildings light filled entrance. The sculpture is composed of a matrix of matte white steel armatures that are punctuated by lozenges of 1/4 inch thick varia ecoresin in a restrained colour pallet of bronzes, greys, dark blues and dusty pinks.

From the ordered chaos of the cascading sculpture emerges the impression of a floating three dimensional stained glass window. During the day, the sculpture is illuminated by the lobby’s ample daylight, accentuating various strata of the sculpture as light streams in. At night the sculpture is illuminated by a system of lights that bring the coloured lozenges to life, projecting their shadows onto the surfaces of the lobby.

Seen from the street at night the sculpture has a jewel-like quality that acts as a beacon. Experienced from within the lobby, the piece draws the eye ever higher through its layers of line and colour with its engaging combination of structure and randomness.
